Mattarella addresses Gaza and Ukraine during official visit to LuxembourgSergio Mattarella has returned to speak out on the Gaza crisis and the conflict in Ukraine during his two-day visit to Luxembourg. This morning, during talks with Prime Minister Luc Frieden and the President of the Chamber of Deputies Claude Wiseler, the President of the Republic addressed the crucial issues of international tensions.
“ No one wants to humiliate Russia or diminish its role . But the stubborn search for a solution must bring true, stable peace, based on law and justice. Otherwise it would not last,” he stressed regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The Head of State added that Gaza and Ukraine are not only fundamental issues of international politics, but they deeply involve our consciences. He stated that it is no longer acceptable to return to the power politics of the past centuries, in which the largest nations imposed their domination over the smaller and less powerful ones. He highlighted how that model belongs to the past, while the future must be based on international collaboration and cooperation , taking as an example what has been achieved by the European Union in the last seventy years.
The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella recalled that Italy has always maintained a relationship of friendship with both the Palestinians and Israel, but underlined that the current situation in Gaza is to be considered unacceptable .
"We must immediately reach a ceasefire and release all hostages by Hamas. The 'two peoples, two states' solution may seem unattainable in this situation, but it is the only viable path."
The Head of State stressed the importance of working to outline a historical perspective that will allow the Palestinians to obtain a State of their own, overcoming suffering and resentment, while ensuring the security of Israel. He stressed the need for rapid reflection , including involving Arab countries, in order to find a solution capable of addressing the current grave situation. Furthermore, during the bilateral talks, he drew attention to the need for faster and more effective decision-making mechanisms, warning that without such a commitment , Europe risks remaining a mere spectator of decisions that will inevitably be taken by other actors.
“Europe must wake up and not miss this opportunity to advance in integration because the Union, the President never tires of repeating, is a special place: the only one where, wherever you go, “you always feel at home”.
